you can be proud of who I am, but that’s it
you can’t take any credit for what I’ve become
you think you can bask in it with me
at the end of trial and war but
you weren’t with me when it was coming down
so you won’t be with me now
there’s nothing to be jealous of
no party you weren’t invited to
I’m on a plateau and these days
happiness is never having to pay lip service
or ask permission or lie
there’s no pomp, no celebrating
except this
living alone with the truth
solid, steady and sure.
