SQUARE LIFE

In observation, poem, Poetry on May 12, 2016 at 11:38 pm

Dexter wears an electronic collar
“It vibrates when I need his attention.”
Dexter doesn’t bark because
“He knows he’s not supposed to.”
I put down my pen and go over to him
he’s strong and stout
beautiful and brown
bubba of a bulldog baring an unabashed smile
all teeth and tongue and beaming
with more love than the lot of us,
sipping our coffee drinks at the cafe
He yelps noiselessly, almost without air,
good boy! until his master comes back out
“Are you embarrassing yourself
in front of this nice man, Dexter?”
Hardly, pal.
