Recorded out at Swamp Studio in Cedar Creek last October, Jim Trainer’s SwampDemo chronicles the singer’s bitter flight from the smallness and betrayal of his hometown to a new city full of new possibilities and a clean slate for the future. Swamp Demo opens with Trainer lamenting in full holler “when my Nissan died on the corner of 49th, the morning we split, I slept in it.” He leaves out no bitter detail along the way to winning his freedom in the EP’s closer “Back In The Game.” There are no frills or fills on this effort, just heartbreak and redemption; all driven home by his stripped down band. The trio performing with Jim on the recording is Billy Brent Malkus on telecaster and harmony vocals along with Justin Kolb on upright bass. Malkus’ twang and co-hollering, Kolb’s solid thump and Trainer’s acoustic strumming combine to give the EP its distinct and bare roots-rock sound.
After cutting his teeth for years backing legendary bluesman Shakey Lyman in Philadelphia, Trainer came down to Texas “following that “Americana sound”. He’s had residencies at the Whip In and the Beale Street Tavern when not playing at Romeo’s, Momo’s or the Scoot Inn. May 6 will mark two years that Trainer’s been living, playing and singing his way to freedom in Austin. He’ll be sharing the night with Malkus and Rebecca Lucille Cannon’s country band, the incredible Texas Sapphires.
After releasing the EP in Austin on Friday May 6, Trainer will head out to Berlin for a string of shows in support of SwampDemo, followed by a week in Philadelphia doing same and recording a split EP with Philly’s Psalm Ships. Friday May 6 will be a night of celebration and music at Romeo’s, with Jim Trainer and all his friends.
